Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance Introduction
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is a magical world of strategic combat and intelligent conquest. With a wholly original storyline for the handheld incarnation with character types and classes that will be familiar to all fans of the series.

The game commences in the quiet village of St.Ivalice, where players assume the role of Marche Radiuju. A snowball fight sets the scene and then the adventure begins...

On returning home from his skirmish, Marche encounters an ancient book of mysterious origins that he and his companions struggle to translate. When his friends leave that evening, Marche soon retires and after a wistful slumber awakes in a new land. Marche soon comes under the care of a helpful creature known as a Moogle who convinces him to undertake a career as a mercenary. His quests quickly become the central focus of exciting battles, fought from an exciting isometric 3D viewpoint.

The battles appear like a 3D chessboard, with several elevations and terrain types. In each turn, characters can move a specific number of spaces then perform an action, such as an attack or use of a weapon. Actions and movement abilities are dependent on character types or job classes. Players can choose to use their experience gained in battles to create powerful warriors. With up to 30 job classes to choose from, the depth of gameplay is exceptional.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance Review
One of the GBA's Best
by Jake Handy

Five years after the release of Final Fantasy Tactics on the PlayStation, the arrival of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance marks many changes from the original. Some changes are for the better, but some are for the worse. Fortunately, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance does manage to carry the Tactics title with pride.

Gameplay
The gameplay in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance keeps to the general formula fans grew fond of in Final Fantasy Tactics, remaining loyal to it's Turn-Based Strategy roots. Like the original Tactics, Tactics Advance boasts a unique job system, in which a certain amount of abilities must be learned in one job in order to proceed to the next, more powerful job. Unlike Tactics, Tactics Advance uses weapons as a way to learn abilities instead Judge Points. Judge Points are not absent in Tactics Advance, but they are instead used to initiate combos and for calling on powerful summons. The new ability system provides a fresh new change, but may disappoint some who were hoping for consistency with Tactics.

Graphics
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance provides a pleasing display on the Game Boy Advance. The game is considerably more colorful than Final Fantasy Tactics, and dims down the spell effects due to the limited capabilities of the Game Boy Advance. However, the spell effects and various animations do not disappoint, providing a graphical experience on the Game Boy Advance that is hard to beat.

Story
The story in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is where the game is most lacking. Instead of deep political aspects and emotional drama found in Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Advance instead focuses on a boy's journey after being teleported into a magical world. This story wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't so much geared towards the younger crowd. The characters become rather annoying throughout the game, complaining over every aspect of their journey. However, despite the pesky aspects, the story does manage to provide a motive to keep you going until the end.

Learning Curve
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is an easy game to learn to play, as it is geared towards the younger crowd. The game features a short tutorial at the beginning, which gets the player comfortably accommodated with the game play. Even if you have never had experience with a Turn-Based Strategy game, you will find Tactics Advance easy to learn.

Music
Of all the titles on the Game Boy Advance, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance beholds the best music. Each tune within the game is unique and catchy, and you may find yourself humming them long after you have completed the game.

Replay Value
Much like the original Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Advance is one of the most replay-able games on any console. While the original story only lasts about 20 missions, there are 300 side missions for much fun long after you've finished the game. You will find yourself spending hours and hours on Tactics Advance, perfecting your individual soldiers and maxing their stats and jobs. Even when you are done with the game, you may find yourself revisiting it for another play through again and again.

Summary
Gameplay - The same original gameplay you love from Final Fantasy Tactics, with a few changes.
Graphics - Top notch for Game Boy Advance, colorful and unique.
Story - Although childish, it manages to keep you interested.
Learning Curve - Easy to learn and fun to play.
Music - Catchy tunes you'll never forget.
Replay Value - You're going to have trouble finding time away from this game.
