Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Introduction
Set seven years prior to the events of the first Final Fantasy VII, the Shinra Company is rapidly increasing its influence through its monopoly on mako energy and military might. With the burgeoning city of Midgar as its base and symbol of prosperity, Shinra is on the verge of establishing absolute dominance over the world.

SOLDIER is a group of skilled combat operatives within Shinra. The elite within the group — those strong enough to be deemed SOLDIER 1st Class — are respected and idolized by the citizenry.

Zack is a young SOLDIER 2nd Class who aspires to become a 1st. He spends his days carrying out assignments under the guidance of his 1st Class mentor, Angeal. During an operation in Wutai, a large number of SOLDIER members, led by 1st Class operative Genesis, go missing. The severity of the situation prompts Shinra executives to deploy even more SOLDIER operatives in hopes of bringing an end to the war with Wutai—and conducting an investigation into the mass desertion. The ones assigned to the mission are Zack, Angeal, and the 1st Class hero who is known the world over as Sephiroth...

What truths lie behind Genesis's disappearance? What secrets bind the three SOLDIER 1st Class operatives? For Zack, a cruel and fateful struggle awaits...

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Review
PSP's Golden Title
by Jake Handy

Out of all the Final Fantasy VII spin-offs, Crisis Core takes the cake. With a new battle system and revolutionary graphics for portable gaming, Crisis Core becomes a hard game to top. Holding the Final Fantasy brand, Crisis Core maintains the quality and beauty expected. If you own a PSP and don't have this game, something's wrong.

Gameplay
The battle system in Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core strays from the standard turn-based system found in most Final Fantasy games. Is this a bad thing? Not at all. The system allows you to equip five or six abilities before going to battle. Once in battle, you scroll through your various abilities and press "X" to perform the chosen one. The abilities show a positive variation, ranging from spells such as "Fire" and "Gravity" to physical attacks such as "Assault Twister". However, while the system may introduce a few new challenges, for the most part it is too easy. On the "Normal" difficulty, pressing "X" over and over throughout the entire battle almost always guarantees a victory, with the exception of boss battles. This is also partly due to the lock-on system, which automatically locks on to the closest unit to Zack. However, the easy difficulty can be easily remedied by choosing the "Hard" difficulty at start. In fact, this setting can even make the game too hard, requiring endless leveling up and constant re-do of annoying battles. While the difficulty in the game may be unbalanced, the battle system does provide a refreshing new experience for Final Fantasy fans.

Graphics
The graphics in Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core are stunning on the PSP. The CGI cut scenes seem to be just out of Advent Children, not only providing excellent, spot-on character design, but also flowing and looking just like the movie itself. In game, the character designs are stunning and well rendered. The backgrounds and settings of Crisis Core are also beautiful, giving the small PSP screen something to brag about. While the game obviously makes no impression on console games, it is top of the line for portable gaming. You won't find anything more amazingly built than Crisis Core.

Story
Being the prologue of the Final Fantasy VII series, Crisis Core explains everything that any fan has ever wanted to know. From Sephiroth's strange origins, to Zack's mysterious background, Crisis Core covers it all and leaves no ends untied. However, the story does run a little short, leaving players wanting more.

Learning Curve
On the surface, Crisis Core is an easy game to pick up and play. There is hardly any time getting accustomed to the battle system. There is a deep materia fusion system, however, that may take a little while longer to master.

Music
Like every other Final Fantasy game out there, Crisis Core does not lack in the music department. From rich tunes of the desert, to heavy metal boss fighting music, there is always something to enjoy. Unfortunately, some music can get repetitive as the side missions tend to recycle the use of the songs.

Replay Value
Crisis Core's main story line is only about twenty hours max. However, there are plenty of side missions Zack can engage in at any save point. These missions can range from searching for treasure, to eliminating a robot threat. There are hundreds of missions to complete, and they are perfect for a short instant burst of game play. It will take you many hours to complete all the missions.

Summary
Gameplay - Different from your standard turn based formula, but manages to keep it's hold.
Graphics - Sets the bar for all PSP games to come.
Story - Crisis Core's story does everything but disappoint, despite it's shortness.
Learning Curve - Fast to pick up, but can become fairly in-depth.
Music - Great, as expected from a Final Fantasy game, although some music becomes repetitive.
Replay Value - With loads of side missions to go through, you're going to be playing Crisis Core for a while.
